Doing the Dishes the Old Fashioned Way

When we moved into this house, there was a dishwasher we could buy from the previous people.

We did, and I was very happy. I have been the principal dish-washer for … a very long time!

At home, I did the dishes and my sister dressed and bathed the little ones. I don’t know how it came to be that way…maybe because I never had much patience with the little ones?

And then? when I got married, I was , of course, again the dish-washer. (My parents now have a dishwasher machine 😉 )

So, like I said, I was very happy to give the job to the machine.

But the machine isn’t very good. It doesn’t always get everything clean, no matter what I do. And then we wondered…how clean is everything else? Does it just look clean, or is it clean? I should check the final rinse-water sometime.

So, we decided to do the dishes by hand again. Mike very honestly did admit that he realized the ‘we’ meant ‘me’.

This is true a lot of the time, but not always. After supper, we do the dishes together. It’s relaxing. Talking together. Working together. And clean dishes!

Abel is old enough to stand in between us and ‘help’ rinse. I love seeing the delight on his little face when he sees me turn the faucet on. He runs to get his little stepping stool and plastic apron, holding it out to me to put it on him. A lot of the water ends up on the floor, but can I tell him he can’t help me now and then make him help me when he is older? And I do want him to do the dishes when he is older 🙂
Not that he always helps. Sometimes I cheat and do it when he is sleeping. But it’s become a little family-tradition moment that we love.

Maybe someday I’ll use the machine again…maybe someday we’ll have one that actually gets everything clean. And it would be rather nice to have it in the kitchen. Now, it’s in the laundry room. So it saves time now not to have to go back and forth)? But now, I really love doing the dishes. I missed it, without realizing it. It isn’t that big of a job, either. And I can quietly think while I do the dishes.

The downside is that more things will get broken…I have a long history of breaking things while doing the dishes. Wanting to go to fast. But she who works makes mistakes. Or something like that.
